If your budget is stretched, there are still areas where you can make environmentally friendly choices at no extra cost. You may even save money.
- Get a housemate and share resources and costs.
- Walk everywhere you need to go…
- …or cycle. No bike? See what’s available via Freecycle. You may find local community bike or climate action groups that can help you with repairs at low or no cost.
- …or car share.
- Don’t throw away food. In the UK, 19 billion pounds worth of food is thrown away every year. Friends of the Earth have a guide to cutting food waste that includes links to apps for sharing food and tips on what to do with leftovers.
- Quit buying kitchen roll and cleaning cloths. Save worn out t-shirts or other clothing and cut into squares suitable for mopping up grease etc in the kitchen. Rags can be washed and re-used.
- Turn appliances off completely and avoid standby mode. See also Energy Saving Measures with the fastest payback time.
- Turn off lights. (Another one of the energy saving measures with immediate savings)
- Line dry clothes.
- Join your local library for free entertainment. You can also borrow ebooks to listen to while you walk (see no.2).
